1. Where is the nearest Osteofit class?

Most Osteofit classes are offered in Community Recreation Centres and Seniors Centres. Click here for a list of current locations. We may not have all of the locations listed and some programs may cancel if there is insufficient registration. Look in the Blue Pages of your telephone directory for the names and locations of community recreation centres near you and inquire directly with them or ask your family doctor or physiotherapist.

2. How many classes are in the Osteofit Level 1 program?

Osteofit Level 1, the introductory program, is a minimum of 12 sessions. Osteofit level 2 (Osteofit for Life) is designed for ongoing maintenance and is offered at the discretion of community centres. There are typically 12-20 classes in each session of Osteofit level 2.

3. Can I attend Osteofit classes only once a week?

You can in Osteofit level 2 but it is recommended that you participate twice per week. In Osteofit Level 1, not only will you miss out on important information in the educational component of the class, but improvements will not be as significant by attending once a week. Contact the facilities directly for more information and to investigate other arrangements for participation.

4. If I have never exercised before is Osteofit for me?

Osteofit was made especially for you! The program is designed for people who have been inactive and want to become more active. It is safe and gentle enough not to cause pain or injury, even if you're not used to exercise.

5. Can I join in the program half way through?

We strongly recommend that you begin at the beginning of the session to give yourself the best chance of success in the program.

6. Do I need a doctor's referral?

No, a referral is not required. Osteofit has been specifically designed to be safe for those with osteoporosis or osteopenia. Experience has shown us that many people who do not have osteoporosis but want a low-impact, strength, balance, coordination, and stretch program will also benefit from Osteofit.

7. What should I wear?

You'll be happy to hear that tights are not required! Wear something that makes you feel comfortable for movement. You may be asked to get down onto a floor mat so loose-fitting clothing that allow bending are best. Your shoes should be sturdy and lace-up style with wide soles for good balance. You will be doing balance exercises and street shoes are generally not appropriate.

8. Do I need to bring anything to the class?

Your instructor will let you know if you need to bring anything special but it is a good idea to bring a bottle of water and your own towel for laying on the mat.

9. Can I take Osteofit Level 1 over again?

Osteofit Level 1, the introductory program, was designed as a stepping-stone, leading to a more active lifestyle for people with osteoporosis and others who are at risk for falls. It wasn't designed to be repeated because the program starts each session over from the beginning. However, if you feel that you are not ready to move on to Osteofit level 2, you are welcome to repeat Osteofit Level 1. Your instructor can help you make that decision.

10. Does Osteofit take the place of walking daily?

No. Brisk walking is an excellent weight-bearing exercise for people with osteoporosis. If you haven't already, we encourage you to include a walking program in your daily routine. Your Osteofit instructor will help you get started and advise on how to make your walking program more effective.

11. I have had spinal fractures and/or have broken my hip. Is it safe for me to participate in Osteofit?

Yes, if you have been cleared by your physiotherapist and physician to join an exercise program. Osteofit will teach you how to avoid future fractures and the exercises will strengthen the muscles around the spine and hip.

12. Can I do the exercises sitting down?

Yes. The Osteofit instructor will help you find the most comfortable way for you to exercise effectively. You will not be asked to do anything that you feel is beyond your ability or outside your comfort zone.

13. Will I learn more about osteoporosis in Osteofit?

Yes. Education and information are essential components of Osteofit. You will exercise and you will be encouraged to discuss topics about living with osteoporosis. These topics have been prepared by the BC Women's Osteoporosis Program.

14. I have completed Osteofit Level 1 and want to move on to Osteofit level 2. This isn't offered at a facility near my home. Where do I go from here?

If you feel confident to moving on to a more challenging exercise program, please join any other fitness program that looks like fun and is designed for your age and fitness level. Your instructor may be able to recommend another program suitable for you. The important thing is that you incorporate activity in your daily life. You can also ask your community centre to start offering Osteofit level 2 classes.

15. What about my daughter or granddaughter? Should she take an Osteofit class?

One of the risk factors for osteoporosis is genetic predisposition. Another is being female. Your daughter, or granddaughter, should be aware of the positive lifestyles strategies she can embrace to lower her risk for developing osteoporosis. Incorporating activity and exercise into her daily regime is one of the best things she can do for her bones, especially when accompanied by a good diet. There are many excellent exercise programs designed for women of all ages and fitness levels offered by community centres and private gyms. Osteofit is an education and exercise program that is especially safe for those with osteoporosis and osteopenia, and those at risk of falling who require a gentle strength, balance and coordination program.
